I think one of the most amazing positive things of this experience was to see the Body of Christ at work. From the beginning until weeks and months after, we were genuinely cared for by so many people without having had to ask. When we first called our parents, prayer chains were activated in the U.S. and Mexico. Our Guatemalan Pastor Eliceo was the first at the hospital before the surgery. The Ficker's arrived with their plane. Cathy, a nurse practitioner, arrived and planted herself at Areli's bedside despite the hospital nurses trying to shoo her away. Sally and Erv showed up with their camera to take some precious pictures and watched over Esther's body throughout the day. Erv later went to clean our house and truck. Emanuel, Josh, and Jose worked all day and night to get the birth and death certificates. Pastor Don was checking in periodically to see what else had to be done. Matt arranged a burial plot and the members of Missionary Community Church paid for it. Pastors Eliceo and Victor drove about 15 hours to the Mexican border and back to pick up Areli's family. Erna was cooking away for all the visitors that would arrive. Many other people were busy doing other things. By this time, hundreds (possibly thousands) of people were praying for us.
